Reseña: The present study is the abridged version of “Situation and Main Transformations of Higher Education in Latin America”, edited by IESALC/UNESCO, Caracas (1st edition, 1996, 3rd edition, 1998). The limited information circulating in English on Latin American Higher Education Systems prompted the publication of this version in order to avail the English public with the quantity data and the main analysis of the original study.

The data presented covers the Higher Education National Systems of nineteen Latin American countries. It presents a global diagnosis with a synchronous perspective of the mid-nineties and offers a huge potential for subsequent analyses.
