Abstract: ESJR divulges results of technical and scientific research in the fields of earth sciences.
The Nacional University de Colombia of Colombia was founded in 1867 being the general Tomas Cipriano de Mosquera president of Colombia. The act 66 of 1867 created the University, which consisted in that time of six schools, among them the faculty of Engineering, divided later in the faculties of Science and Engineering. The Astronomical Observatory and the museum of natural Sciences were attached to it later. Now, in adittion to these units, the Faculty of Sciences consists of the station of tropical biology at Villavicencio and the panteological museum of Villa de Leiva. The National University is considered the main centre of superior education, being validated by the results of the evaluation of near to graduate students – ECAES, and by the number of scientific publications, researches and development projects done. Actually, the centre has eleven faculties with 108 graduated programs, including 43 master degree level and 11 of Ph.D level. Between these eleven faculties, the Faculty of Sciences is relatively young being created in 1965 grouping the schools of Biology, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Geosciences, Chemistry, Pharmacy and the Astronomical observatory. The architect and urbanistic Leopold Rother Guhn designed the Bogotá campus in the period 1936-1939, an aerial view of it and some buildings can be observed in the photographies around this text. Surrounded by chain of mountains, the campus is placed in the middle of Bogotá city at the east of the beautiful Boyacá-Cundinamarca savannah at 2600 m over the sea level, with a nice spring weather all the year.
The Geosciences Department has a well-established undergraduated program in Geology and three graduated programs at master degree in Geophysics, Geology and Meteorology, with a close future graduated program at Ph.D degree level.
Three scientific journal are published by this earth science centre, supported by their respective master programs, i.e.: this one Earth Sciences Research Journal (formerly Geofisica Colombiana), Geología Colombiana and Metereología Colombiana.
The master program in Geophysics is oriented mainly toward Oil and Mineral Prospecting and Seismotectonics, supported by acquisition instruments in the different areas of Geophysics and Computer labs with specialized software. Geology graduated program has the following fields of action: Exploration of natural resources, Environmental Geology, Disaster prevention and Tectonics. The Meteorology program works in Weather forecasting, Atmospheric contamination and Climatology.
